Invasives workparty

LOCATION: Phase 4 – Spruce and Hemlock. Meet by the corner at Hemlock.

For all work-parties please bring your own gloves, hand pruners and a garbage bag for collecting flowerheads. If you can also bring a weeding tool to get plant roots out, so much the better, but we will bring a set of these for volunteers to use. All volunteers are asked to sign in on arrival.

If you can’t make this workparty you can still contribute to the 2022 tansy ragwort effort by tackling small patches of it in your neighbourhood, independently. It is particularly valuable to remove individual outlier plants, so as to prevent them from spreading and becoming a bigger problem next year! We encourage you to send us photos and tell us where you are doing this, so that we can start mapping where tansy ragwort is spreading: you can email us at invasives@galtt.ca.

How to deal with tansy ragwort: Aim to get the whole plant out of the ground if you can, using a weeding tool if necessary to get the roots out. What next? It seems that some (well-intentioned) people are still throwing the plants on the road, where even if they get flattened and dry out the flowers will nevertheless go to seed – like dandelions – and then get spread around the island on vehicle tires, which is precisely what we DON’T want! So although it is fine to leave the stems on the ground where they were growing, please be sure to cut and bag the flower heads and take them away with you to decompose in the bag.
