PUBLIC PRESENTATION

Big Trees – Global to Local and how we can preserve them for future generations.

3 pm: Join forester Greg Herringer for a 90 minute presentation about British Columbia big trees, how we protect them and how to encourage tree growth in Gabriola’s ecosystems.

The talk will begin with a global perspective on big trees and their protection in several countries including England, Tasmania and Iran. How do the citizens of these countries view these trees and recognize the value they have to their societies?

The focus will shift to the big trees of British Columbia and what legislation and policies are in place to protect them. Greg will recount some key historical events in British Columbia that provided the impetus for these policies to be put in place and how they have evolved.

From there, the focus will narrow to big trees and their ecosystems on our island, using Gabriola’s own big tree registry to illustrate the importance of implementing sound forest stewardship practices that will help ensure the survival of these unique trees for generations to come.
